Nando's Lemon Squeezer Project
Lemon Squeezer Project: Initial Ideas and Insights

Big idea:
Create a citrus squeezer for a chosen brand which is commercially viable and contains features which represent the brand.
Who’s it for?
Nando’s - the South African fast food chain, known for serving flame grilled peri-peri style chicken.
What are you doing ?
Designing and modelling a lemon squeezer, coherent with Nando’s aesthetic, for use by the customer during their visit to the restaurant.
Hunches
I could try to mimic Nando’s stained wood aesthetic. I could make it small and handheld for tableside use. I need to make it self explanitory. I could try to use the black and red theme used in their branding.
Key insights
Look at currently used nandos croquery and other examples of this in similar chain restaurants. Look into the history of the company and get a stylistic feel for the restaurant setting.
Key directions
Mosaic, colour, stained wood, Nando’s seasoning, earthenware.

Conclusion:
I am very happy with the product that I designed and modelled. I believe that I met the brief well, and created a product that I genuinely believe could be used for tableside serving at a Nando’s restaurant. I very much enjoyed this project and I feel as though it helped me to learn new ways of designing and sketching.
By creating the empathy tool for testing, my eyes have been opened to a new way of designing to incorporate as many people as possible. Emulating a specific user’s experience when using a product  is a great way of helping to brainstorm new ideas as it breaks the mould of what you think is needed.
I have found in the past that I often get stuck on a specific idea and struggle to ideate any further but I feel as though using an empathy tool in my designing process is a great way to break this habit and force me to adapt my ideas further.
The product I created is to be manufactured from clay/terracotta as I feel as though this would be best suited to fit the aesthetic of the restaurant. I designed the product to be manufactured using slip casting from a 4 piece mould.
I wanted the product to be able to withstand repeated use from the public and use in a dishwasher.
